3 inches of fluffy white stuff have fallen here in the last hour so here's hoping there will be a decent amount to try the car out in by the morning.

Don't forget some photos!

Cruicd, same here. Could be fun in the morning, too much wine tonight to try it out just now. Let's hope it doesn't rain overnight, although a trip to the Lecht could be on the cards.

Sadly stopped snowing and warmed up so pretty wet heavy stuff by morning and roads pretty black. Nothing to have fun on. Ski slopes had good quality stuff though so skiers had a good day.
Hopefully more snow will come below 2000 feet.

Don't get it why would you want snow? Is it because you've brought winter tyres? and want your monies worth. Snow and ice as to be one of the worst combinations you can have, don't care how much you paid for your tyres, there won't stop you skidding on ice.

Bonzoboy,
One of the main reasons that I have owned quattros over the last 14 years is due to the weather conditions where I live and the requirement because of my job to get around regardless of weather. Winter tyres are an integral part of the package and to answer your question as to why I would want snow there are times when going out for a bit of a play in new deep snow is great fun and also has the advantage of confirming how far you can get with the car in extreme conditions. Some SQ5 owners on this forum like to have their fun, dare I say lots of, blowing off more overtly sporting vehicles with their "Q car" which is understandable. I have seen the day when I did this kind of thing but tend not to now, sorry if I sound boring in middle age.
With regard to ice you are right that on sheet ice because of a zero coefficient of friction winter tyres will not save you although studded tyres, which are not legal for UK road use, would be an advantage here. Generally though sheet ice is not the norm on road surfaces but rather patches of asphalt which are frozen with surface frost and due to a combination of multiple tread sipes and more flexible rubber compounds winter tyres provide better grip on this than a summer tyre hence you do not find yourself tiptoeing around in fear of flying into the undergrowth at < 20mph.
In certain alpine areas of Europe it is a legal requirement to fit winter tyres for sound reasons and in this part of the UK I can assure you that winter tyres all round improve safety and mobility regardless of whether you have 2 or 4 wheel drive. Just look at how quickly some UK Motorways have ground to a halt and become car parks with sudden snowfalls in recent years as most vehicles cannot find traction on summer tyres.
I admit that spending money on 4 spare wheels & tyres may not make economic sense if snow fall and freezing temperatures are rarely seen but it is worth doing in some more northerly and higher altitude parts of this island.

Im with you. The last thing i want is snow and then to be in a car - any car.
the 4WD system of the Audi won't save you. Clearly its better than 2WD, but its not a RR level system.

Snow Man, some of us unfortunately have no choice but to drive in snow, especially when you live up a substantial private track that the council don't cover. Hence I have a large snow blower and two 4x4s with winter tyres. If I fretted every time it snowed, I'd never be at work or supermarket etc. Yes, LR can do it better, that's why I have one as well as the Q5. Clearly though, as pointed out we're talking about snow and not ice, which is far worse and could only be tackled with studded tyres that I drove with every winter for 6 years in Norway.

Surely the point of a raised 4wd vehicle is to enable greater mobility in adverse conditions otherwise just buy a 2wd car. 4wd on a low level high power car such as RS5 & R8 has significant advantages i putting down power on wet surfaces thus safe cross country/roundabout negotiation but probably not the best vehicle to take out in low temperature conditions as the laws of physics cannot be overcome regardless of transmission system.
Full blown Land Rover transmission as in RR or Disco rather than more basic Freelander/Evoque system may be more sophisticated than quattro but I wouldn't rate your chances of avoiding mishaps on snow/ice any higher than a Q model Audi with the standard LR issue 19 - 21" rubber. Tyre choice plays a big part here.
I assumed from your title that you were either a winter sportsman or resident of snowy climes although you do not disclose your location.

R8 is shocking and I'm mean shocking in the cold (0 or less) never mind snow/ice. i have had the rear end over take me before... (the tyres are summer only). Also its really RWD or mainly RWD.

This is the reason we got the Q5 (last one and i guess this time too) was its ability to get out when things were bad on the roads, it simply allows you to still drive when things like snow happen or if you get caught in bad weather. i avoid going out if i don't need to but respect others need to carry on when the white stuff lands.

Snow blower - i want to play!!!!!!

Snow is around us so it won't be long before I get some action on our back roads before heading to the main roads.

That's good traction control to get you back on to the hard stuff, might try that one out with the bank in front of the house.

Yea - we're going to need to see this snow blower Hector!

All in good time Jose, because the car's in the garage I can't get to the snow blower to show you. I know, kind of daft, should be easy to get to in case I need to clear the driveway to get the car out.... such is life for us simple country folk!
