I've done over 8000 miles and my MMI oil level is now less then half. So I think a top up is in order. I checked the manual and I think the oil spec is Vw 507 00. So use 5W-30? Also does the SQ5 have a diesel particulate?

Anything else I should know? I know there is a bottle of 1 litre of shell in the boot, but I want to order/use something else.

What oil do you SQ5'ers use or recommend?

Right I have narrowed my selection of engine oils to Ravenol and Castrol.

Ravenol recommends the following 2 oils:
RAVENOL VMP SAE 5W-30
RAVENOL WIV III SAE 5W-30

Castro recommends the following 1 oil (for all Q5 TDI's it seems):
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL - Product data here
I though originally I would use this: CASTROL EDGE PROFESSIONAL LONGLIFE III 5W-30. Is the Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL just the new version?? *EDIT* - seems to be the latest stuff as data sheet is dated '02 Nov 2015' where as the former is 2013. Titanium FST info here and here.

So to wrap up:
I don't want to use Mobil or Shell.
Does anyone have any experience of using Ravenol (from Germany) or would recommend?
Which Castrol oil (Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL appears to be the right choice)??

Why don't you want to use Mobil or Shell?

So what to use?
  1. Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL (with Titanium FST) (02.11.2015 spec)
  2. Shell Helix Ultra Professional AV-L 0W-30 (27.06.2014 spec)
  3. RAVENOL VMP SAE 5W-30 (02.11.2015 spec)
  4. RAVENOL WIV III SAE 5W-30 (02.11.2015 spec)
On another note is everyone getting a top up bottle from the dealer of Shell oil or Castrol in the boot of their SQ5? Is there a shift in VAG dealers from Castrol to Shell and if so why?

Regarding the brand of oil supplied in the boot and used in servicing I have had Castrol, Mobil 1 and Shell Helix from various dealers since AVS was introduced in early 2000. Initially I think dealers all supplied/used Castrol Longlife (503.00/506.00) as it was the only lubricant initially available to this VAG spec. All VAG oil filler caps have "recommend Castrol" stamped on them to this day although dealer groups tend to use the brand that their preferred oil company produces to the appropriate VAG spec hence the different brands in members load bay.

The dealer I use had changed from Castrol Edge Professional 5/30 to Shell Helix 0/30 (both 504.00/507.00) when mine was last serviced.

Personally never had a problem with Mobil 1 since it first appeared, as a 5w/50 grade I think, back in the late 80's. I've not heard of engine blow ups with it, where did you read about these?

One such example here about an Audi A8 engine blowing having only ever been run on Mobil - could just be coincidence though LINK

I would really like to hear forum members opinions on:
Shell Helix Ultra Professional AV-L 0W-30 vs Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL (with Titanium FST)

Which oil is going to give the best protection and keep the engine cleanest (free from sludge, ash/sulphur deposits etc)?

Mine came with a litre of Castrol Edge and I have used this in all my Audis over many thousands of miles without any problems at all. So long as you stick to the service schedule you should have no trouble. My 2.0t petrol Audi drank oil but the SQ5 hasn't needed any. Just an observation - my S3 always had sooty tailpipes but the SQ5 stays squeaky clean.

Hi

I used castrol edge 5w/30.... at 9000 my car came up with the low oil warning and advised to fill with 1litre.... so 1 litre of castrol edge later she was happy again... no concerns.

Was that the new spec Castrol with Titanium FST?
