Getting a roof box on

This is the first time I've ever owned a 'high up' car.

In the past, with our 5-series Beemer and old A6, I'd hoist our roof box up into the car port then back the car in, then lower onto the roof bars.

Meant doing it was a one-person job.

However, while the Q5 is only 20cm taller, I don't think I'll be able to get it out from under the car port if the box is already on (if it would even go on).

Any tips for manhandling a roof box on top by yourself?

I can just about get mine on by myself but usually enlist the help of one of tribe to help to avoid disasters! The real issue is getting inside it to secure it to the roof rails; I end up using a small set of steps but even with the box attached to the rails to the opening side i.e. not central, it is a stretch to secure the internal fixings to the bars. Also when away, as I don't take the steps with me, it can be difficult getting stuff in and out (it is a shortish, car width box and I am 6' 1" tall) ..........

Ah OK.

I leave mine strapped to the bars with the feet in place. It made sense when I could just drop it straight down.

I have, on occasion, put it on our old car from behind by myself (balancing it on my head and shuffling forwards

), but it's a pretty big roofbox and the Q5 is that much taller that I think that's a no goer too.

I also seem to remember that when I asked my wife to help, it caused more problems than it solved.

I leave my box attached to the bars, and can get it on and off fine with my 5ft1 tall wife *if* she uses a step. We just walk up to the back of the car, she gets on the step, then it's light enough (it's a Husky full-length) that I can slide it forward while she guides it on her side.
