Hi guys,

I purchased a certified preowned q5 with only 35k miles on it, and when i test drove it there seems to be no issues. After purchasing and driving on not so friendly roads, within 2 days i noticed back seat rattles coming. After about couple weeks, dealer agreed to look at it and found that the issue is related to torsion bar problem with rear seats. Its been nearly 3 months and they keep stating that there's no fix from audi.

I've been upset as the notice of this problem was over week and half prior to my purchase of the vehicle and i was not notified of this potential issue and i'm not sure whether the dealer didn't know or just didn't want to be responsible for it. I've contacted audi customer service and they haven't exactly been helpful either.

I browsed through the forums and didn't see anyone with torsion bar related rattles. I'm not sure if anyone can provide advise on any ways to fix it instead of having to wait for audi's techs to figure it out as it is getting quite annoying. I really like the car otherwise and i want the rattles to go away. If not, I'm considering legal options as well to possibly null the sale of vehicle as i think when they certified the car and gave me a certificate, this type of issues should not be missed.

I appreciate your input on the matter and any relevant advice to resolve the problem.
thx in advance!

Dave

First time I hear about something like this "related to torsion bar problem"

In some cases, users are rattling the back seat between the pin and the lock that clamps on to the seats in the rear are resolved so as wrap some type of rubber insulating tape around the needle basically locks

Hi folks. Thought I'd post on here before going into Audi.

Doesn't sound quite like the problems described in this thread, but the rear seat back on our Q5 has developed and irritating noise which is like a ball bearing rolling inside the seat. Going through a roundabout you can distinctly hear it rolling from one side to another ( it's the larger section of the split seat model. I've cleared everything out the car to ensure its not my 5 year olds paraphernalia under the seat - so I'm out of common sense ideas. Has anyone experienced this?

After removing everything from the car ( again) and leaving things alone for a while in the hope that the noise may sort itself - ( well it hasn't) so its now booked into the local dealer so their 'master tech' can have a listen to it and hopefully we'll have this sorted. I've asked to take said tech out on a road test myself so the 'ball bearing' noise can be replicated, which shouldn't be hard - it happens on every sharp-ish curve and every roundabout without fail. A total PITA unless the stereo is cranked up really loud its bugging the life out of me ( yes, I should go and find some real problems to deal with)

Kind service receptionist tells me there will be a charge if this isn't the result of a manufacturing defect - fair enough, but I fail to see what else could give rise to what is happening. Will update the thread once they've had a look and a listen.

All sorted! In updating this wee gremlin to its conclusion, I also poke gentle fun at myself. The noise was a 20p piece in the nearside rear door pocket.

I looked! I really looked - and I didn't see this. It didn't get picked up when I clean the car either and I always pop the vacuum nozzle in the door pockets to clean any dust out.

Ah well! Maybe its an age thing or I need my eyes testing.

On a very positive note, Ayr Audi come up trumps again for service, Their workshop foreman came out with me for 2 test drives to hear the rattle - it was him who found the offending 20p, and the car was returned to me valeted and without any charge. I would have been happy to pay the going rate for time spent ( or wasted) - so delighted all round.

Rattle free Q5 again.

That's a good result. Many, many years ago (late eighties) I worked with a team that installed a computer system at 'Ingrams of Ayr' which is what the Ayr Audi is today, absolutely smashing people and I have fond memories of my time there.

Sq5john,
Not strictly correct. Ingram had both Audi & VW in Ayr for many years, since early 80's I think, with a further dealership in Paisley from circa 1990 until 2002. They lost the Audi franchise in 2003 continuing with VW & acquired the Skoda franchise after loss of Audi but Alec Ingram obtained "Audi Approved Repairer" status thus was able to continue with the brand and continued to supply new cars sourced from another dealer south of the border for a few years. I think that they gave up Audi Approved a few years ago.
Lomond Audi, Glasgow, Edinburgh & Stirling, acquired the Audi franchise in Ayr when Ingram lost it but did not initially have a proper showroom. They were the official dealer but a significant number of customers remained loyal to the Ingram family who were local and continued to have their cars maintained correctly and warranty work carried out under the Approved Repairer banner.
As far as I know Ingram still hold the VW & Skoda franchises and are not part of the Lomond group.

The above is spot on. I continued to use Ingram for servicing on my former A3 and the A2 as long as they were an approved repairer. The former Ingram audi showroom is now skoda and hyundai.

Ayr Audi do a good job but i miss the family feel of Ingram.
