Depends if you want a bit of poke, how far you drive, and want to afford the extra diesel!!

I've had the 2d and was averaging 30mpg, and my sq ain't much less,as far as poke goes the 2d seemed adequate for everyday driveing, but I found it did lack the fun aspect ,wich pushed me to the sq 😄

I wanted the ground clearance and therefore staying with the Q5 (rather than the SQ5) felt the 2 litre a bit under powered to what I was used to in the past. The obvious choice for me was then the 3 litre V6, and I still don't regret that decision.

I test drove a 2.0d s-tronic and it seemed fine on the short test, but I must admit I was sold on the 3.0 once I drove that, as stated it has that bit extra when you need it. Quite a refined drive really, but depends on a number of factors regarding how many miles, type of commuting roads you will be using. I used to average about 32mpg on the commute with a mix of mainly motorway plus a few miles of normal roads at either end. Now on a SQ and that's another step up again, plus more smiles

I have had the 170ps model for nearly three years now and it's been fine, occasionally I felt like I needed more power but my wife and I have been very happy with it. However I now have an SQ5 on order not because I thought the 2.0TDi was inadequate just because I wanted one. You really need to test drive them and see what you prefer, as far as I'm aware there is not a great deal in it with regard to MPG but the initial outlay is obviously much greater with the 3.0.

I did a 380 mile round trip in both a 2.0 and a 3.0 and kept to the same speeds as far as possible. Both gave 44.1mpg.

Overall though I reckoned the 3.0 to be be around 15% worse than the 2.0 as you just had to succumb to the temptation to use the extra power.

I am avoiding a test drive on the SQ.

Fantastic mpg figs there ,ur a gr8 advert 4 Audi 😄

Same story with me! I had the 2.0 and loved it, I just wanted a bit more power at times. The 2.0 at cruising speeds was great though.

When I tested the 2lt, it was a bit underpowered especially up hill on the country roads near my house, so 3.0ltr for me. If you have many hills then go for 3.0ltr, if not I am sure the 2.0 will be fine. Picking mine up tomorrow.

I picked up my 2.0 yesterday, and even though taking it easy, I can tell there is plenty of power for any of my usual needs.
I studiously avoided test driving the 3.0, because I knew it would be tempting to have the extra power on that rare occasion, but it's only worth it if either money is no object, or you're going to be carrying 4 large adults around with you everywhere you go

I text drove a 2.0 TDI, but ended up getting a 3.0 TDI S-Line plus. I found the 3.0 to have a smoother power delivery and just sounded better even on tickover!

The 3.0 diesel is far superior, but quite a bit more expensive than the 2.0 which IMHO is barely adequate for the car. If you hassle the 2.0 it seems to drink as much fuel as the 3.0
I'm sure the 3.0 is superior, but to say the 2.0 is barely adequate is slightly strange..
Barely adequate for what? at the legal speed limit it is ticking over, at 90 you can put foot down and accelerate smoothly and effectively.
Might not be adequate for German autobahns, but for UK, and keeping 12 points on the licence, I'd say more than adequate

Well have bought a 2012 ibis white 3.0 tdi s line will be picking it up next week.
The difference between driving them both ie the 2.0 and 3.0 was quite a shock in perfomance. I think I will be able to live with the fuel difference and the tax as I do not do big mileage.

Thanks for all your help and advice on this forum it as been a great help.

The Issue really is as always budget, of course the 3.0 Is superior to the 2.0 In most aspects and In an Ideal world we would all have 3.0 or SQ's whichever suited your requirements.

Reality Is a large number of buyer just can't afford the extra price/running costs for 3.0/SQ

It Is very easy for SQ owners to comment on the underwhelming performance of the 2.0TDI as they are in the fortunate enough position to be able to afford SQ

I for one am made up and really excited about picking up my puny 2.0TDi next week,

On the subject...off topic.. I've noticed a few times some posts that have shown signs of elitism from SQ owners towards other unworthy Q5 members with only 150/177BHP!!

Nice one and I don't think you will find too much fuel difference between the 2.0 and 3.0. Certainly the case between the two engines in the A5.
The 2.0 is a cracking engine though, my Dad has it in his Q3 and a mate in his A5, now remapped but is wasn't exactly slow before!
