SQ5 v Touareg R Line?

So I have now had 3 separate friends who have bought a Touareg R Line over the past 6 months telling me how great they are and how fast they are and how I should have one of these amazing machines...

I started to explain my doubts as the figures are far different 313bhp vs 245bhp and 0-60 in sub 5 seconds vs 7+ seconds but I just gave up when one of them said the salesman had told him it was the quickest diesel on the road, which we all know is total nonsense!

So what is the deal? Are they the same engine? Obviously the Touareg has a slightly larger build and also has a very high quality build, maybe not as refined as the Audi but I consider them in a similar category?

I guess what I really want to know is next time the subject comes up (and it will as they all want bits done in VCDS) do I just agree that their car is great knowing full well it is the SQ5's poor relative or do I actually back my case up with some facts... all in the name of banter.

I don't know about the Toureg but there is a world of difference in build quality of my Q5 vs my 2012 Tiguan. I know the latter is in a lower category but stick your head under a Q5 and there's much more use of alloys in suspension and subframe as in the bonnet and boot. For me the build quality is makedly apparent. I may be doing a diservice to Toureg owners but perhaps someone can enlighten me.

Agree 100% (I had a couple of Passats and a Tiguan as company cars and drove a Toureg over a few days as a hire car on a couple of occasions).............

Interesting points made on the build quality, I always thought VW's were very well made and therefore commanded a higher price tag than other brands.

I do like the Touareg R Line and it does deserve respect but I did not think it was in the same league as the SQ5 for performance and I understand that the build quality is just not Audi either.

A race sounds tempting but in reality is very unlikely. I'm happy just knowing I was right about the rubbish I was hearing and let them beleive they have a technically identical car for a lot less money.

VW build quality - not for the last 20 years...!
"people cars" just cheap, made to a price point. Have you seen the inside of one

Plastic looking/feeling leather, fake wood and cheap plastics.. for 49k, you would have to be off your head.
its not on par with the 30TDI Sline car never mind the SQ.

Get the banter rolling, they haven't got a leg to stand on , seriously not in the same game let alone league, the SQ is faster,smoother,more powerful, more exclusive,and better looking , there just ganging up on you cause there's 3 of them, bottom line is you'd whip there ass on torque alone , GAME OVER ????????????????????????????

Possibly bigger inside? SQ5 boot space = 520 litres vs 580 litres for the Touareg.
It has a higher ride height, but not as sporty. 1624mm vs 1733mm tall.

Only 2 design differences I can think of as possible pros for the Touareg depending on your viewpoint

When I was shopping for a new vehicle, the Q5 3.0 TDI + S-Line was my primary contender. Knowing VAG, I decided to compare the Q5 to the Touareg. I found VW's offering to be more expensive, less luxurious, and in my opinion, not as good looking. I can't figure out why someone would get it over a Q5, unless you're a die-hard VW fanatic or an Audi hater.

Well in Oz the top Touareg has a 4.2tdi engine, which puts out more ponies/torques than the SQ5, but is slower to the 100km/hr at 5.8, still not that bad though, even if it is significantly more expensive.

Holy thread resurrection.

I test drove a Touareg R Line - The 262 BHP version last summer and it was pretty decent. The amazing thing was the level of kit that came as standard. I'm a Volkswagen or Audi man through and through and don't really see the point in badge snobbery - Audi owners sneering at VW, are you forgetting who owns Audi!! I'll more than likely get a Touareg R Line next time as there's nothing in the current Audi set up that I like.

Having come from a r line Tiguan the Audi is a much much better car. Should never had traded my a4 for the Tiguan but was getting itchy feet! Went to buy a golf gtd but the wife didn't like the fog light grilles so before I even thought of anything else I bought the Tiguan. Within a year I was looking at sq5's wishing I bought one so 3years later I now have one!
