Which diesel?

In my last car a Range Rover Sport TDV8 I ran the car on Ultimate diesel virtually all the time. On the odd occasion when I didn't I really noticed a difference when I next filled with Ultimate in that it ran much smoother and was quicker.
So what do you use and why

I use whatever is cheapest.
when ultimate first appeared i tried it out, noticed ?5 more on filling, and 10% decrease in economy with no noticable power difference...not impressed.
These days i use whatever i can get cheapest which used to be supermarket but on my commute these days i detour to Trago mills where i can get Shell fuel currently cheaper than anyone else.
fuel is fuel, it all meets the same standards!

heard from the horses mouth that although standards may be the same, fuel can differ significantly sometimes. But guess your point is they all meet a minimum standard so that should be good enough

I suppose when my old car weighed 2 1/2 tons any advantage was maybe worth it and especially as I wasn't paying the bill for it.
But when the Q5 arrives I will be paying so I guess I'll just have to stick to the normal stuff and be happy. Perhaps just stick the odd tank of Ultimate in and give it a clean out. Some people in the LR world are putting 2 stroke oil in with the diesel. I never tried that.
I'm not sure about the supermarket stuff though, especially after that water in the fuel fiasco...............I just can't understand why if all fuel is the same they can sell it cheaper than anyone else. The principle "Is it cheap for a reason" stops me using it for now.

i always used to use elf diesel when itwas around and used to get an extra 10mph and a quicker throttle response,shame i cant find it anymore.for now its sainsburys as i have a sainsbury's fuel card
