Having never used this, nor really intending too at this point I wondered how the system works.... Is it something that you can program something to happen from scratch or it has to be an already existing functionality available through the vw line up that can be activated

Reason for the question is I'm toying with heated seat option being added to my order but given it doesn't come on till you hit the switch and are driving it's pretty much a stretch to justify. Whereas if vcds could be changed to have this function switch on as the car is unlocked below a certain temperature then I would consider it

Thanks

It is only to activate/adjust feature already implemented by VAG. Its not a full coding environment. So while you would need to use it to tell the car the heated seats exist, the auto heat on cold ambient is not going to be possible.

They do heat up very quick - so if you press it as soon as you sit down it does take away that chilly feeling in a few seconds.

Also you would not want the heated seats to come on unti you started the car. Battery drian would be heavy imo.

Another couple of novice type questions;
Is VCDS the same as VAG,com which I know non VAG agents use to access and modify VW/Audi software or is it completely different?
I am keen to get the Ambient Footwell Lighting and would try to do this through the MMI "hidden menu" but from other posts it says that one has to "enable" the hidden menu via VCDS first.
Do i need to find a VAG specialist to do this for me or is there another way?
What is a VCDS cable?

Regards to all.

They are the same thing yes, vagcom is the old name for it.
If you buy the VCDS cable from Rosstech the software you need is free.
As you say, you need to enable the hidden menu with VCDS.
If you only want to do one mod and likely won't be sticking with the VAG brand long term find a local VCDS owner to do it for a crate of beer. If you want to play a bit more and will likely have other VAG cars in the future and wish to receive an occasional crate of beer splash out the ~£200 for the cable...

Jose,

Thank you for that. Q5 is my 7th Audi and 16th new VAG (VWs & Audis) my wife or I have bought since 1985 so unlikely to leave the brand soon.

Does VCDS just give you the ability to activate stuff or does it have diagnostic software to read fault codes as my kids have older VWs that I do most of the straightforward maintenance on?

Yes, it reads faults and clears them etc as well. There are a few different cables to fit different age models, obviously I suggest you get the latest cable (as you will need it for the Q), but it may not work with your kids VDubs if they are pre '95...
This is the official site... http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHUC.html Somewhere on there is a link to distributors to find a UK seller. Don't be tempted to go for the cheap ebay knock offs...

Jose,
Kids VWs are '05 & '08 so no worries there the port under the dash is the same.
I shall look into the RossTech option. Thank you.
