Hello Ladies and Gents;

Problem; scenario..car is locked, open car with remote fob and all doors unlock, the passenger door wont open from the handle outside, pull the lever from the inside and the door opens. Close the door and try it again from the outside and it will open every time and close every time 100% until you lock the car with the key fob and unlock with the key fob. To which you have to repeat opening from the inside to be able to open it from the outside again.

Research thus so far is faulty door lock mech; but they all relate to not being able to open the door at all from the outside.

Any ideas welcome please, has anyone else had a problem like this or come across it before?

2009 1st Edition Q5.

Thanks
Simon

Have you checked the settings for locking/unlocking of doors? See if the rear doors are doing the same as the front pax.

all other doors checked and work as expected; checked the car setup and applied the central locking to single locked and unlocked - it did what it was supposed too; then put back to unlock all and the problem still remains. I have found loads of threads about how VW/Audi common problem with the pull wire from the handle to the locking unit; but ALL relate to the handle not working at all or being intermittent. Mine is consistent in the scenario as mentioned, once opened from the inside it will work all the time until locked with the key fob. The handle does feel looser/slacker than the others I might add also the car has keyless entry but we've never used it as we always forget - old habbit have a key press a button not rocket science :)

Hi

I have just purchased a 2009 plate 3.0 TDI with exactly the same problem but also affecting the rear passenger door aswell as front passenger door.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Wasn't until after driving away car and parking up the problem showed itself.

I would perhaps suggest trying to get a scan of the car completed first before buying a new door lock? This may assist both in isolating the problem.

Had the problem on 2009 SE N/S/F and the door lock was replaced under warranty - about £300 I think. Started happening on rear (warranty expired) but went away - although we rarely used the rear doors. I suspect it is not an uncommon problem.

Very common problem on VAG Cars - they must make a fortune out of replacement locks.

I had the same problem on my drivers door. Central locking wouldn't open it but I could open from the inside or using the physical key in the lock. Having replaced the lock all is well again. Once the door is unlocked you can open and close at will. Its the central locking 'Open' micro-switch in the lock that fails.

The complete locking mechanism part is £121 from Audi Parts and takes about an hour or so to fit. Whilst you are fitting its prudent to fit a new Bowden cable as they can stretch; that's anther £10 from Audi parts...........

If you really want to save cash you can disassemble the lock and try to clean / change the micro-switch, although this in general tends to be a short term fix.

I have just had this problem on my 2009 Q5 on the rear door. My mechanic thought it was the common issue with the lock and replaced it but the problem still occurred. Turned out to be the lock cable in the end.

With mine, if I applied a slight pressure on the door just above the lock when pulling the handle, the door would open. Try this and it might help to determine if it is the cable or lock.

I paid my mechanic £180 to complete the lock change, including parts, and he changed the cable for free when we realised it wasn't the lock. Good luck and hope this helps.

I am now about to sell the car and as such booked it in to be fixed, local VW/Audi Specialist (labour was cheaper to go through him; he passed it to Audi and gets trade rates 80 per hour instead of 120); he has said on the computer and speaking with the Audi guys they said common fault £227 including fitting for a new door lock. On the down side my sun blind on the panoramic roof has also just messed up has not wound in properly as such any one wanting to know its £700 for a new one fitted. As I believe in karma and would not sell a hooky motor both get fixed next week before it appears on autotrader. thanks for all the help and advice about some spot on advice - right on the queue; just don't fancy taking the doors off myself or the entire roof card (Audi say 5 hours for them to do it - yet are having the car for three days!)..

I replaced the drivers door lock on my 2009 3.0TDI about a year ago. The part cost about £120, and it was a fiddly job, and only needed basic tools, but it's not impossible to DIY. They are common failures on VAG cars

Having a similar problem. Both rear doors won't open with handle after unlock. The guy who sold me car says it's programed like that. Some combinations of key fob and buttons inside. He can't remember. Can it be? How to return it to oroginal state. When I unlock it fro outside you cant enter back doors. If you ooen them with handle that you can ooen them from outside until car is locked again.
