We are all individuals and have different pain thresholds. A number of tyre manufacturers manufacture low noise tyres with inserts. These are readily available. Regarding noise what doesn't help are tyre profile, tread pattern, pressure, sidewall rigidity and road conditions. My Q5 has very low tyre noise and mine was supplied on 20" wheels with Pirellis.

This problem has been reported occasionally on this site. There is not a magic solution for this. A few Q5's have this issue, the majority don't. I believe it directly relates to the sensitivity of the driver. However, a working solution has been to replace the tyres with noise cancelling ones, look at the EU tyre label.. They have a pad inside the tyres which attenuates the low frequencies. Pirelli, Hankook, Continental.....

Audi's as a matter of course do not make roof noise. This is coming from the road/tyres and being transmitted to the roof. I would check what tyres are fitted. I cannot recall there ever being a roof issue with noise but a few with tyres and noise. The Q5 is a quiet vehicle at any legal speed so, the ones you have tried must have a common problem, maybe winter or all seasons tyres in warmer weather.

I am sorry but there is nothing else I can suggest. Audi sell over 300,000 Q5's per year and if there was a global problem of this nature then they would have addressed it. All UK reviews of the Q5 back to 2010 state that it is a quiet car, better than most. Might I suggest that you try another manufacturer who hopefully does not have this problem.

It is your point of view. The drivers of over 300,000 Q5's purchased last calendar year, including me, cannot all be wrong. As I suggested earlier then ditch the Q5, test drive some comparable vehicles then make your mind up as, it is your hard earned money.

I have had a Q5 for 14 months. I drive in all road and weather conditions and I have never noticed a noise problem over and above what I would expect (No car is perfect).

Quantifying car noise is very difficult as you would need an anechoic chamber with instrumentation. A lot of the input that you will get will be subjective.

Its your choice. Professional car reviewers have stated that the luxury Q5 noise is better than most. If you are sensitive to noise then purchase a car which is better for you. Bearing in mind your experience with Grand Cherokee's then how about getting a more up to date one because I can't see that you will ever be happy with a Q5.
