So my second issue so far in the 2 weeks of using my Q5 is the iphone MMI interface. I have an old iphone 3g (as I now have the 4g phone) which I have loaded with all my music, put in to airport made and connected to the MMI interface in the glovebox. It's running iOS4 FYI. But the navigation of the menus through the Q5's screen is almost impossible due to the loading time. So for example when I 1st hit artists it can take 10 secs to load them then it opens starting with A-Ha, Aaliyah, Adele, Alien Ant farm etc. It will then let me scroll down 2 or 3 pages before it stops and then does nothing while it seems to load in to its memory another 4 pages say. This can take 15-20 secs! Additionally when you fast scroll and the icon comes up allowing you to scroll to artist 200 out of 215 say, I hit enter to confirm my scroll position choice and then it takes even longer to try and find this page. Inevitably what happens is after 30 secs the screen reverts back to the 'now playing' song due to inactivity and I have to start the whole process again and never end up going to artist 200 out of 215! So to play Scouting for Girls for example would take an age to scroll down 4 pages, then wait for the next 4 pages to load, then scroll down another 4 pages and so on.....

As you can imagine this makes this setup useless unless I only want to play artists on the 1st 4 pages!

Does anyone else have this issue and how is scrolling using an iphone through the MMI? I could buy a cheap 20g USB hdd to pop in the car but am not sure this would not have the same issues and the up side of using the old iphone is that I can just connect it to itunes, hit update and all my new songs will be added automatically. Using an external HDD will require me to remember what new purchases I've made etc and manually transfer them.

As I type and think I should have connected my Iphone 4G to the MMI and see if that has the same issues. Am currently at work now so will try that tonight and see if the same issues occur.

Don't know if this helps, but I've just switched to Iphone 4. Just before the switch I loaded iOS4 onto my old 3G. It was beginning to slow anyway as I reached the memory capacity but really slowed down when I loaded iOS4 and every operation took forever. I'm just wandering if the problem is the phone and not the HDD

That is something I was thinking is whether its an iOS4 issue. Does someone have iOS3 working at an acceptable speed?

It probably takes a long time due to the number of files on your phone. If it's any help, I have loaded all of my music onto an SD card (16 Gigs)and it fits into the media socket of the stereo. It only cost ?18 for the card and ?1.30 for the reader/writer to connect to the computer and I can leave it in the car permanently (except for updating). It takes a while to read the card when you first turn on the car (Due to having nearly 16 gigs of music files) but it starts where you left off the last time you were listening. It also allows you to organise your music into folders and navigate the tracks/folders (which show up on the screen) via the scrolling button.

Thanks for the reply. Yeh I had this set up on my RS4 and it works fine. I could do this with either the SD memory cards or just attach a usd HDD to the MMI via the glovebox. But the beauty of using my iphone is that it doesn't cost me anything and syncing my music and new purchases is easy. I am wondering if its an iOS4 issue that will need addressing by Audi in a software update. Who would i be best to contact re this? Audi UK?

I too have experienced a similar issue with an iPhone 3GS that is now running IOS 4. Previously with IOS 3.2 it would scroll through the tracks rapidly using MMI, now it is very slow indeed.

It would be interesting to know if anyone with an iPhone 4 has had any problems?

I'll hook mine up tomorrow and let you know if it has the same issues. If so then its an issue with iOS4 that needs solving in a software update. Apple say over half of all iphones have been updated to iOS4 now this affects over ha;f of all iphones out there. I guess Audi UK would be the people to speak to regarding a software fix for this?

Ok I just hooked up my iPhone 4 and there is still a delay but it is quicker than my 3G running ios4. You can scroll down about 4 pages before it pauses to load the next 4 pages but this time is cut from maybe 30 secs to maybe 6 secs. To me though this 6 secs is still too long. Was there any delay on ios3 at all? It's only loading a few lines of text.

So in summary the iPhone 4 is still slower than ideal but usable. My 3G is just unusable (all running ios4).

Just a quick up date to this issue.

I have now installed iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 3GS and I am pleased to report that the issue with scrolling through playlists being very slow has been resolved. It is now faster than ever.

Anyone with problems should download the new update and hopefully all will be sorted.

I can confirm that the software update is much much better. It is now usable again! There is still a small delay at times but its maybe a second (on an iphone 3G). I'll refrain from upgrading to the new software in Nov in case it kills it again but if someone does upgrade could they post their findings here and let us know whether its still working in the new version.

Thanks

Has anyone updated to 4.2 and can you confirm whether its as quick as 4.1? Don't want to update and then find out its gone back to how it was on 4.0.

Thanks

Probably no help, but just for reference, my 3GS comes up as "not supported" - the old iPod that I leave permanently in the car (U2 special edition black version, so maybe 6 years old?) works perfectly and scrolls virtually as quickly as the iPod itself can through about 17GB of music.

Perhaps they (Audi) developed the link-up based on the older systems?

I have two ipod cables (one from my previous A6) I notice from the contacts that they are not the same. Just wandered if anyone else might have problems because they are using older cables. Just a thought.

I dont use my iphone with MMI link anymore as was finding it very slow, i purchased a 8gb sd card, downloaded it full of songs then imported them to the media interface (took an hour or so for about 600-700 sings) and now i just use the jukebox, quick and seems to be problem free..

Well the iphone was very slow with software version 4.0, 4.1 improved it massively and now wondering if 4.2 is as good as 4.1 before upgrading. The upside of using an old iphone or ipod is that you can just connect it to itunes, hit sync and all your new music and playlists etc are on there without manually having to go through, remember what you have bought and then transfer them to the SD card.
