Can anybody please tell me whether or not there are any circumstances where you would not want 'hill assist' engaged.

Can only think that it would be wasted in an auto. In my last auto I never used the hand brake once.
I thought that the type of automatic gearbox on the Q5 was such that it does not necessarily hold on a slope. I have found that this is also the case on my TTR. Admittedly, it has to be quite steep. It is for this reason that I have specified it. Regards, ZED

I experimented on this in the drive way.
When releasing the footbrake there about appears to be a 2 second delay before it actually releases, this gives enough time to get on to the accelearator and drive. I would say hill hold assist is a waste of time in the stronic config.

well i have had my Q5 since march and it has s tronic , if you have s tronic you should have hill assist as the s tronic is only semi auto and the car will roll back on a hill, for ?60 I wish I had known this and would have ordered it. If you have an auto then there is no need for it

Hi Rahoo
I was advised by the salesman when ordering my Q5 S-Tronic that the hill hold was not required as the car has an electronic handbrake, so when the handbrake is applied on a hill all you have to do is press the throttle and it disengages automatically.
On my last car a VW Golf 7 Speed DSG the hill hold only lasted two seconds after you came off the foot brake and sometimes that was not enough time before running back, so I think applying the electronic hand brake will be a better option, at least I hope so as I have not picked up my new Q5 yet.

you are right it has an electronic hand brake and its a real ball ache to have to keep putting it on in traffic, hill assist would have saved you the aggrevation of having to keep putting it on, and sometime when you are stop start on a hill it does irritate you I can say that for a fact...I wish I has had hill assist just incase I forget to put the brake on

Hindsight is a great thing but just think you are not on hill starts all the time so we will just have to adapt. I was lucky to get a test ride in a manual car before I placed my order
never mind an auto, they were like hens teeth so there was no way of trying out the hill start.

Thank you all for your comments. I am glad I ordered Hill Assist and think that I shall leave it permanently engaged, unless any body else comes up with a good reason to not!!!

Unfortunatly you have to switch it on each time you start the engine !!, but definatly worth having.
