Just unwrapped the bars for the first time and have discovered they come with a rubber strip. Anyone know what it's for?

The instruction leaflet doesn't mention it.

The rubber strip is for the channel slot on the top of the bar to protect the bars. It is a right pain to get in though as the more you slide it in the tighter it gets. It took a quite a while to slot in. Use plenty of soap or lubricant if I were you.

Yep, realised this when I turned the bars over! The term numb nuts springs to mind.

Started to slide them in but gave up after a couple of mins - ended up just pushing them into place with my thumb.

The rubber strip not only provides a bit of padding and grip for things you put up there but it also covers the "T" slot to stop it whistling at speeds above about 60 km/h.
