My dealer has just told me that this option will cost me another ?800 or so over the brochure price of ?995. Apparently the brochure was printed wrongly and didn't make clear that the DVD players themselves have to be bought separately through 'Parts'. Makes it another very expensive option. Does anyone else have any knowledge of this?

Another reputable dealer told me a while ago that they deal with a company which retro fits dual dvd players - in the headrests rather than protuding from the back of the front seats (as with the Audi supplied ones). They told me that it was a very professional job and the price they quoted was certainly less than the ?1800 or so that I'm now facing. Anyone any experience of retro fit dvd systems?

have a look in this thread - some bod has got aftermarket rather than OEM rear DVD players

Look a lot nicer than the AUDI ones to my mind

Not sure if you can get them in the uk

I know of a good company Chorley Car Audio who are sponsors on my previous car's forum.......who have a very good reputation for product and install. Could be cheaper than the below option

Or you could try the Audi/VW specialists Richter Sports Ltd at Milton Keynes. On their web site for the Q5 there are the options of an Alpine system or a Rosen system. I reckon a few dealers would subcontract the job to them anyway.

Gingamog - they look really good for the money.

Do they somehow connect up with the car's power supply rather than using their own batteries, and I take it you can't see any wires trailing around the place?

I wonder how difficult these are to fit yourself!?

Hi

Mine are wired in (no batteries) and the wires are not visible at all.

They seem straight forward to wire in, though I didn't have the time myself to do it ... Or could be bothered doing it to be honest, therefore i let a reputable car audio shop do it instead.

Each screen has it's own DVD unit so different films can be watched or the same film if required as they are wired together. Also comes with 2 x remote controllers and 2 x headphones.

The 'leather' is also a good match - I have black as i have the S-line spec.

Would you be able to post some pics as I think this looks great, if you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost including fitting as the units look like a bargain, just worried the head rests will look a bit too different on my s-line alcantara

you can pm me if you like

thanks

Hi Raj

Yes, I will post some pictures shortly ... Just waiting for an opportunity to do it in day light, as busy at work during the day.

I paid ?450 in total which included fitting - cobsidrably less than what Audi are charging.

Cheers

Here is a picture as promised. It shows one head rest zipped up and the other unzipped. As you will also see the headrests with the 7" screens are proportional to the seats and the previous restraints.

Gingamog (or anyone with these xtrons installed).

Are they/can they be wired into the car's stereo system so that the audio comes through the car speakers?

Are they/can they be wired into the car's DVD player (if you have Tech Pack High) so a single DVD could be played on the main dashboard screen and both rear screens? That would be pretty cool.

I ordered the Xtrons regardless and am picking the Q5 up on Saturday.

Cheers,
James

Hi James

The sound can be routed through the car speakers via the inbuilt FM transmitter in the Xtrons, though have not tried it myself as I prefer the kids to use their headphones whilst I have my own music on.

As for hardwiring the MMI DVD into the Xtrons - not sure. Perhaps ask your installer?

Xtrons are good -t he kids love them and I think the Q5 is a fantastic vehicle. I'm sure you will enjoy yours.

Cheers

Ah ok - that's interesting re: the FM transmitter.

I spoke to my local car audio specialist, and he said they can be wired upto the front DVD providing you have the latest 3G MMI System (which comes on the Tech Pack High) and additionally purchase an expensive ?300 MMI AV Interface - that seems a lot of money just to be able to switch what the kids are watching from the front DVD player!

Also I'm not sure (but am finding out) if you can continue to use the SatNav/MMI once you have a DVD playing through the front DVD player and transmitting to the rear DVD screens. I'm just envisaging wanting to switch the rear DVDs for the kids, but not wanting to stop the car and get out to do it.

Do you know if there are any warranty issues by installing these? My local audi dealer advised me not to get the Audi items and go with a private company, so I'm assuming you can get around any potential issues by simply removing the rear DVDs and wiring.

Cheers, James

I have used the DVD to watch a programme (not linked to the Xtrons) whilst the Satnav has been operational ? so you shouldn?t have a problem there. Besides the Satnav does not work from the DVD but the MMI Hard Disk.

As for the warranty issue ? I had exactly the same concerns myself and was told by a couple of reputable car audio installers there is some EU directive/legislation regarding restraint on trade to protect consumers against this very thing.

The other reason for my purchase of the Xtrons was that they are easy to remove inc wiring should I sell the car and wish to keep the DVD units. The original Audi headrests are safely wrapped and stored in the loft for that very day ? which will hopefully be many years away

Regards
John.
