I have the low prep GSM in my Q5, when ever I am connecting to the blue tooth, I have to manually accept the blue tooth on my mobile phone to establish the connection. On my wifes Audi TT the same phone connects to the the blue tooth with out having to physically accept the blue tooth connection, this is more convienant as I dont have to take my phone out of my brief case.

(don't laugh please) my hand set is a nokia 6310i, is there anything on either the hand set on the head unit that I can set to save me having to manually accept the blue tooth connection.

I use also a 6310, and it works...
I think you only have to make it "visible"
