Just had to buy a new battery car 3.0tdi 3 year and 3 weeks old. Audi wanted £120 just to test it, an auto electrician had all ready told me it was duff. £217.00 for a new one so got a varta silver L1 delivered for £95 with 5 years warranty from Tayna batteries.

I know this thread is a bit old now but hopefully you or someone can answer my question.
I think I might need a new battery for my 2.0 tdi. Am I able to just swap a new one over ? The Audi dealer quoted me 400 quid to supply and fit !!!! Unbelievable! And gave me the reason that the new battery had to be 'programmed ' into the cars system. Seems a bit fishy to me. I would have thought you could connect up a temporary power supply and connect the new one and that would be sufficient.
Has anyone replaced a battery on a q5 themselves? Any help much appreciated

Yes you do need to code it so the car battery management functions work correctly. This video show you how its done; its easy if you have VCDS or can get a friend to do it.

I'm sure it will work without coding but your battery might not get the 'necessary' management (I guess charging voltage / current) and it might not last as well as one coded correctly.

Battery will be about £100 for your car (have a look at Euro Car Parts or similar). All independents that service VW/AUDI will have VCDS, I would say £50 max to fit and code. Maybe cheaper if you get the battery from them fitted.

I certainly would not be paying Audi £400.......

I had the same dilemma on my BMW Mini CooperD. The battery went just after 3 years. I bought a new battery independently and fitted it myself, but then paid £50 to BMW to code it. I am told the reason for coding is that the management system will not know there is a new battery and it will think the old (worn out) battery is still in place and keep pumping juice in, eventually damaging the alternator. Also when I changed the battery the stop/start did not work until it was coded so I believe it is true it needs coding.

I watched the you tube video. I don't see that if you get the same battery it doesn't need recoding. The video is confirming you do need to code it.
Wouldn't the serial number of the battery be different for each one?

I agreed the serial number doesn't matter. It's the fact you are replacing a dud battery with a new one. This is what they are saying affects management system as it's still pumping in high amps and will damage the battery. I'm not saying I agree or disagree. Be interesting to hear from those that have changed a battery without the re-coding. Did everything work as normal?

Can anyone recommend an independent specialist in Kent? I've called a couple and they have both insisted on fitting a genuine audi battery and not an after market one. Not sure why maybe makes the job easier? They just said it would be more reliable once fitted. The Audi one is twice as much as one from euro car partsparts oror similar. any suggestions?

My 3.0tdi s line is a March 2010 model, the battery is just starting to struggle if the car is left for a few days without use. I have looked at buying a replacement on line but have heard stories that the battery has to be changed at a dealer who needs to reset the ecu after the new battery is connected
Is this correct?

Also when i look up my car online it shows a smaller battery should be fitted rather than the one I have?

any thoughts

Kcsun, it does need to be programmed in but you don't have to go to an Audi dealer. An independent specialist should be able to do it. I ended up getting them to get the battery for me so in the event of any issues I had one place to go back to. They did fit an official audi battery so I didn't really save there, but the fitting was a LOT cheaper than Audi doing it

That could be why, I did have the factory towbar fitted, really pleased with it, it tucks away out of site when not being used.

Think I had better go to the Audi garage for a quote, will post it after a stiff brandy haha

Update for you all
I have just had the new battery fitted by my local French garage. They did fit the larger battery as I do have the factory towbar. Had to have the ECU reset as stated above.
Total cost 297e and a 3 year warranty on the new battery

Quick question. I'm ok coding the battery when I get around to replacing the battery. But does the car remember all the settings, radio etc after the change over? Do I need a radio security code? Anyone used a memory saver while changing the battery?
