Had a weird thing happen

We had been driving for about 30 miles, key was in my wifes handbag in front footwell, when we went through a toll booth on the motorway, as I pulled away the car gave a "BING" and on the DIS screen came the message "NO KEY IN CAR" we were doing about 50mph at the time, my wife quickly pulled the key out of her bag and we pushed it in the keyhole, 20 seconds later the display cleared and we carried on to destination, came home with key in handbag - no problems

What would have happened if we had not put the key in the slot?
car cut out?
more warnings?
brakes slammed on?

Bit worrying to say the least

Car is only two months old so battery in key should be OK

Not to worry, the car won't stop or do anything dangerous. Once the car is started you can drive off quite comfortably however once you stop the engine and you want to re-start it then you'll be in trouble as there is no key.

No reason to panic.
That's one of the things I've tested as soon as I got the car.
Left the key at home on purpose and started driving hoping the car to issue a number of abusive warning, slam on the brakes, lock me in and fill the cabin with a poisonous gas. To my dismay a pathetic yellow key warning on the DIS was the best it could master. I got bored after a few minutes and returned home disheartned.
In an normal car you atleast need the key to go anywhere, so much for added security of modern systems.

kcsun - I wonder if the toll booth was significant? They may be using RF technology to remotely read pre paid permits. I am not a physicist, but it may be that the frequency used some how conflicted with the RF used by your car to pair with key? That could be total b*ll*x but I'm just putting the theory out there! There are certainly many recorded instances of stray RF signals blocking remote key fobs - including supermarket door sensors!

Or the handbag moved in the footwell and for some reason the signal was blocked.

Anyway glad someone tested it so that we know.

And talking of panic.....with luck I should get my Q5 before the Vat increase

I wondered if it was the toll booth as well - I was in the aisle next to the telepeage (Dartag?)aisle so it could be stray RF as you say, at least I know not to fumble around looking for a key whilst doing 130kmph in the fast lane, as well as loading a CD, lighting a ***, setting the sat nav and of course texting with the other hand

and they say only women can multitask
