Morning folk and happy new year...

Well after finally getting paid out by the insurance 3.5 months after the theft am still in my original Q5 tdi. Not a bad place but rather be in the SQ5 Plus the B*******ds stole!

Avoid Eridge Insurance if a quality insurance company required. To date not yet received a single letter or form except for a interview document which should of gone to the investigator not me. Had the money but all on the strength of a phone call. Amazing.....

Anyhow my point. The panoramic roof rattles and creaks like a bugger. I have read the many articles across the web and various Audis seem to suffer from it however locating a how to fix on a Q5 with pic. assistance I cannot locate. Is it a relatively straight forward replacement of guides etc, or is it defo a stealer job? Tis an important part of the car and don't want to balls it up! If it is a stealer job any guides of costs here?

Any help on this would be grateful to receive and blinkin cold out there and have to have the roof open to stop rattle.

Cheers and happy driving....

Glad the insurance sorted you out and the other good news is that I think the rattle can often be sorted with a special type of grease. The search engine can be a bit hit or miss but there's been posts on here about it.

When my roof started to rattle the dealer was planning to replace the whole assembly under warranty, however Audi instead instructed them to apply dollops of "special" grease to the mechanism.
I was sceptical but a year later its still quiet...
Worth a chat with your local dealer to see how much they'd charge. I'd have thought an hours labour should cover it.
I've got an old pdf (2010) showing whats needed but I can't see how to add it to this reply.

Hi there I also had this problem on my Q5! Luckily mine was under warranty,at first the dealership told me they realigned roof and applied lubricants but on way home from dealership the rattle and creaking returned,to be fair to dealership they did acknowledge there was an issue with some sunroofs and they promptly rebooked car in and had it for 2 days and apparently fitted new sunroof,it has resolved problem as it is now as quiet as a mouse!!í ½í±Œ

Cheers folks, didn't even realise you need special grease so learnt something there. Available across Auction site easily about ÂŁ20. I think worth a throw before booking it in to be done, like to do my own if possible.

In this case and guides as to which points to apply to specifically and which to clean out and using which method would be really helpful. Being lazy instead of wasting vauluable time surfing the web highway...

Cheers RussJ for such a comprehensive instruction guide. I take it the 2 types of grease are relevant to the Q5 as they are the other Audi models? Seems reasonably straight forward and indeed keep a kitchen roll handy.

I phoned up the stealer to ask how much for a service and they have quoted ÂŁ240.37 and need the car for a few hours. Seems a little OTT for a clean and lubrication service with no guarantee to cure the bloody infuriating rattle.

Recently had my rattly sunroof 'serviced' for free under warranty on my first service at 20K miles by Camberley Audi.

However I serviced the rattly roof of my old Q5 myself by purchasing the appropriate silicone paste and giving it a good dig out with the same results.

Morning folks.

Well a quick update to this. After a lengthy chat with the stealer and driving down the price they have my car. If fact they have had my care for nearly a week! I agreed to have brake fluid change as was needed. They phone me up to say because of lack of maintenance possibly the bleed screw sheared in the caliper and needs replacement. Would I like them to go ahead at a cost of ÂŁ540?????

Lengthy "discussion" ensued.....

They now replacing the caliper FOC, Reducing the cost of the other work and grovelling. What a thing to say to the customer and she knew it after I told her I worked as a service receptionist for 5 years. If car was damaged in their care by them why should the customer pay! She now eating humble pie and I was incensed...

Riding round in a 17' plate A4 Avant. Nice car and new Virtual Cockpit interesting to have. But no Q5.

Dealer let me down yet again....... Disappointed....

Anyone know what a 'sunroof service' is and how much it costs?

Car is in next month for an MOT and heater element recall, was asked if there was any warranty issues, and I said the sunroof was making a strange noise when sliding, and wanted it greased. Was offered a Sunroof Service, but declined and said I just wanted it looked at under warranty (which is ending soon).

Get it checked out under warranty. If there’s a fault it should be fixed free. That sunroof service seems a bit of a rip off to me. I’m sure in other posts somebody listed what grease is used and where it was obtained. It used to be that door hinges and other moving parts were all lubricated during a service and was included in the price. Want your ashtray emptied sir ?? That will be £60 and includes a skoosh of air freshner to hide the smell of smoke for 5 minutes. Dealers ?? I hate them lol

Just booked the RS in for service and said 'sunroof service' and the dealer said 'is it rattling? "No", right it doesn't need a service....good enough for me.

Mines not rattling, it's just a bit squeaky when sliding back and forth. It was greased by dealership last autumn, may have used it once or twice fully open since then, closed all winter and now it's a bit squeaky.

Will see what they do or say. If not I'm guessing it myself. What grease do Audi use? Any recommendations?

1. Lubricate the seals with special lubricating
paste G 052 141 A2.

2. Lubricate the mechanism components with
lubricating paste G 055 751 A2

Anyone know how much these 2 cost from Audi Dealer?

Copied from elsewhere:

G 052 141 A2 is Krytox grease. Used on all seals and rubber rubbing parts . (Works on dashboard rubbing bits that make noises too)
G 055 751 A2 is a opaque lithium grease.Used on pivots, slides etc
I think I will just use equivalent products. Plus maybe something like 303 Aerospace Protectant or CarPro PERL Trim Protectant (which I have), would be better because it would protect the rubber seals, rather than Krytox grease that just treats the symptom (or a bit of both). Plus its a UV protectant as well

Just to follow this up, I performed my own Sunroof service last weekend, and it is now as smooth as butter. All rubber and seals cleaned, protected and greased, and to the mechanism tracks. Didnt take long. Tip for anyone else that wants to do this - front seats forward, sunroof fully open (hold knob for further opening), and stand in the rear passenger footwells. You will have easy access to everything.

That is a ÂŁ137 staying in my pocket

I had a 2016 Nissan Navara (somebody had to) , it squeaked in the cab so loud it was driving me insane, and I had no sunroof.

Found out it was the bonnet seal, dab of lube....heaven it was silent.

I now keep all my door seals lubricated with dedicated "Thetford silicone door seal lubricant" used mainly on motorhomes and caravans, squeaks just disappear, without it my Caravelle would be annoying with small squeaks.

You want to use grease similar to what Audi use. Lithium white grease might not be thick enough. I would use for the rubber/seals anything that is specifically designed for them and it should be ok. Not rattling or squeaks yet. Just get it nice and clean and lubricate the contact points as per the diagram.

I don't know, I've never used it. Open your sunroof fully, and have a look at the grease already in there. That will give you an idea of what type of grease Audi use. Or order the proper grease from a dealer.

Hi everyone, Just wanted to share my experience yesterday. I took my 15 plate SQ5 to Audi Warrington to have the rattly sunroof looked at and the stop start fault fixed.

The sunroof has had new rails fitted with an updated part- 8R0877049B, the B is the important bit, the previous part number ended with an A. They fixed it for free but said they did it as a 'good will gesture' as the fix wasn't covered by the Audi extended warranty i got with the car when i bought it from Audi Manchester less than a year ago. What a joke!

They also fixed the stop start fault saying the same, that it was done as a 'good will gesture' as that wasn't covered by the warranty either.

While i appreciate they were fixed for free, I think its appalling that defective roof rails and a wiring loom aren't covered by an official audi warranty. These are not perishable items. As a result I definitely wont be extending my warranty when it expires next month.

2014 64 plate Q5 with Pan Roof - flippin annoying rattles NO LONGER!

Had the 'sunroof service' from Stratford-upon-Avon Audi who charged ÂŁ200, 5 months later it was bad again.
The problem is the cables stretch and need recalibrating, not crappy grease to stop the noise which is a rubbish solution fixing symptoms not cause.

Check out this YouTube video - talks about his A4, but works fine on Q5.
This resets and calibrates the mechanism - took 2 mins, no grease required.

You don't need to remove the fuse - just power on, pull down as is shown and hold it down until the process is finished.

Hope this helps - it's transformed my car.
