Hi all, can anyone advise as to a good battery charger for this car? I've just noticed that my old Halfords charger (bought in the days of my Ford Escort) states it's only good for petrol upto 2000cc. I wouldn't know if this actually matters and I haven't needed to charge the battery yet, but I'd like to be prepared.

I tried a bit of internet research but there are a lot of boffins out there making reference to ripple and pulse maintenance and my eyes started to cross, so if anyone's got any straightforward suggestions I'd be grateful 😊

Ps. It would also be useful if said charger could work on a 3.2l v6 tt battery as well.

Does it have any way to 'shut off' at full charge? If not then it shouldn't be left on for any great length of time but will do for charging should you need it.

I have a C-TEK charger which does all sorts of reconditioning etc and can be left on to maintain full charge - different models and prices, have a look :)

Thanks badbaz.

It does have a shut down function when it thinks the battery is charged. The age and the stated limits of the charger makes me wonder if it is able to accurately determine a correct full charge on modern agm batteries, so am leaning towards a new model. I've recently installed a new battery into my wife's 3.2 v6 tt which has gone flat and I would like to be more certain that it gets charged correctly.

Out of interest, what ctek have you got?

I'd be concerned at the new battery going flat, unless the car isn't moved for weeks. Sounds like you have more of a problem than the battery. Maybe some corroded terminals or dodgy earth somewhere.
As a side not the size of engine isn't too important for batteries, it's the spec of the battery that counts. Look at the numbers on the battery that will give you the information you need.

MXS 3.8

I see they do one now with a selection for Stop Start AGM batteries - not even sure if Q5 has that type?

Re the TT, locked cars can't go much more than a few weeks without flattening the battery - how long is it lasting?

My mistake Medic; the battery wasn't flat after all, but all the little lights indicating an active alarm had gone out and as my wife has been unable to use her car for 3 weeks I assumed the battery was probably flat. Started up with a small cough but otherwise ok, now on a conditioner.

Badbaz, thanks for that. I was looking at the ctek mxs5 which has the agm function (the SQ5 does have start/stop), might give this a go.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I can vouch for the c-tek; I've got one and it is great especially at bringing dead batteries back to full life

Got one of these when I accidentally - totally - flattened the £170 leisure battery in my caravan. Brought it back and has been good as new since. Once it's charged the battery up it automatically goes into a conditioning mode so it can be left hooked up for long periods.

Great bit of kit and quite compact.

CTEK absolutely the best, and many dealers (certainly in Oz and UK) use these. I have 5 units on various cars (MXS5.0) and m'bikes and are selectable for different battery types.

Can someone please recommend (with a link preferably) me a CTEK etc that would be ok for SQ and also work on a Seat Leon or A VW Golf? Thanks.

I bought this;

https://www.amazon.c...g?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's charged and conditioned a 1st gen TT and a 2016 uk SQ5. As per reviews and advice I'm hopeful that this was a good purchase. Best i can say is that nothing has exploded yet.

Thanks managed to borrow a CTEK v7 from a mate. Will have to invest in one at some point I guess.

I have a CTEK already for my Boxster. I thought I'd use it on the SQ5 as it's been sitting a coupele of weeks with only short trips to the supermarket. How do you get the cover off the +ve terminal on the battery - before I end up breaking it?

You push it. You can also access the terminals on the battery which is in the boot.

I know where the battery is :-)
I just want to know how to remover the safety cover from the positive terminal so that I can clip on the charger. I’ll try pushing down on it to see if moves, if that’s what you meant? Thank you!

ah, it kind of clips up from the side of the battery, quite easily.
cute charger on now and running....stage 3 pretty much straight away.

I might invest in another permanent battery connection that plugs directly into the CTEK

Charge from the engine bay. Lift the flap near the wipers for positive terminal, negative to the frame/bolt.

I added a permanent ctek (not “cute”) battery conditioner connection to the battery in the boot, just after my last post. Easy to get to and connect and kept the battery conditioned thru lockdown . I added connections to the other two cars at home too. I would recommend
