You should certainly persevere with the ECU upgrade if it is applicable to your Q5 as it really does make a very big difference to the way the S-Tronic gearbox works

So you've had it applied? please share your experience in getting it done

Its was very simple. I called to book the Q5 in for service and was told the recall upgrade was needed and would be done when the car went in. Sevice and ECU upgrade all done in one day. :-)

I had this software update applied to my 3.0tdi about 3 months a go. Definately drives better imho. Better pick up and smoother power delivery.

I will say when I asked what the upgrade would give me I was told by the service dept that there would be no performance enhancement. Well I think they are wrong.....but then I'm not surprised at their lack of knowledge.

I called my service rep. back a couple of weeks after the upgrade to tell him how pleased I was with it and what it had done for the car. He said that he appreciated the call as they do not get any indication from Audi as to what the updates do. Now that he knows what to expect from the upgrades I think he will be far more eager to apply it to other vehicles.

I have finally got around to booking my car in for this and a couple of other niggles. Before I even listed the issues I wanted looking at the rep noted that there was a recall for an ECU upgrade (2.0 TDI).

I just want to try and understand from previous posters, is there a difference between the ECU upgrade (please, 2.0 owners only, there has been an ECU recall/upgrade for the 3.0 around for a while) and the Stronic software upgrade referenced previously (HST xxxx)?

I dont want to get fobbed off that the ECU ugprade will "fix everything" if the update for the Stronic lag issue is separate.

thanks.

I had mine in recentlly (2.0 s-tronic.) for sun roof rattle and Complaining about the lag in the gear box. The service manager informed me that there was an ecu upgrade. Afterwoods it turned out that it was to do with the oil level indicator only.
Again no progress at all with the lag issue.
He said he would bring it up with Audi but I suspect nothing will come of it.
They solved the sunroof rattle completly by removing the wind deflector, a new one is on order.

Overdue update on this one. Took the car in for a few niggles including this a fortnight or so ago. East Kent Audi were once again utterly charming (esp as I didn't buy the vehicle there!). Sadly, no luck. The HST posted above does NOT apply to the S-tronic 2.0TDI. It is for the (non-UK) 8-speed slush box. They trawled through all bulletins and found nothing. I trust them totally as they DID find something for another niggle I had which was an occasional oddness with the drivers window - it would click a few times after closing as if it was still trying to close. A TSB was found indicating the replacement of the motor with a new version which was done last week. Also the ECU upgrade was applied but as noted this is just for oil level indicator (that I had no problem with personally).

The excellent service manager has elevated this to Audi and will keep an eye out for similar issues in future and advise if so.

I'm afraid its too late for me, I've just ordered a 30d X3. No doubt now a fix will be issued in the 6-8 months it'll take to arrive :D

Sorry to here that things are not completely resolved. If you are referring to HST 2023820/3 (18/10/2010) then I can assure you it is for the S-Tronic tranny however I have the 3.0TDI so maybe that makes it not suitable for the 2.0TDI.

Congrats on the purchase of the X3 - I'm sure we'd all be very interested to hear your opinions once you've had a chance to get used to it.

I see that Audi still will not recognise the problem with the 2 litre Q5 gearbox. As for not having it reported that is wrong I reported it to Audi in 2009 but as per usual they have probably sweeped it under the carpet. As I have said before I have to use sport mode in towns and on continental motorways to pass bunching lorries and take off safely at traffic islands.Maybe when the wake up to the fact that people are looking and buying other 4x4 models they will wake up.I also have and XK 4.2 and the gearbox in all modes is fantastic perhaps Audi should drive one.
I will say however that with winter tyres there are few places here in midwales I can,t get to, so the Q5 isn,t all bad

2.0 s-line auto.
Hi all.

I recently returned my car to Hull Audi to have its new wind deflector fitted to the sunroof.
This was to correct a severe rattle that had developed. In honesty I did not think this would cure the rattle but I am pleased to say it has.

More interestingly since I got the car back it is running the best it ever has. The gearbox all though not perfect is transformed and the performance seems improved.

Not sure if it`s my imagination but each time I drive it it just feels so much better. I contacted Dale the service manager to thank him for the roof and mentioned about the cars new Va Va Voom!!! and my impression about the gearbox improvement.
He commented that a couple of software updates had been carried out but he did not know what they applied too..

I am sure it must be something to do with the gearbox.

So get your 2.0 auto into the dealers and let me know how you get on.

Regards Neil..

Good news at last Neil

I am still trying to resolve my Homelink issue so the car hasn't been in for any updates recently but on the back of what you say I will get it in sooner rather than later.

On the issue of the Homelink I am having to deal with Homelink directly as the dealership have made no progress for over a year. Homelink were very surprised that a customer was having to deal with the issue themselves as the dealer would generally be responsible for sorting any problems. Another big stick to beat them with I think :-P

Thanks for the update.

I enquired about this HST 2023820/3 update at Harold Wood Audi whilst my car is booked in for other work. They told me that if they find this applies to my vehicle i will be liable for 'further' charges because as far as they are concerned my Q5 is up to date.

Is this right? Sounds very underhanded. First experience with service department and already im unimpressed.

I nearly caused an accident last night due to this issue. Leaving the station and tired from work I was at the front of the queue waiting to join the dual carriageway roundabout. Sat there for quite a while and finally saw a small, but safe gap. Stepped on the gas but had forgotten to drop into sport mode and the bloody thing tip-toed forward and the thurst when it finally came left me literally half a second from being sideswiped by the next car coming around the roundabout. It might only lag for a second or two but in those situations it is like slow motion.

It has left me really shaken and moreover angry that Audi still have not acknowledged and fixed this issue after two years of reports. It cannot be normal that an auto box does this. So many on this forum alone describing and reporting this exact issue.

I am counting the weeks until my X3 gets here with its non-laggy, non-confusable 8 speed ZF transmission.

I had the update applied to my car. Audi Harold Wood ended up being very good infact and I do notice the difference.

I collected my 2.0TDI S-Tronic last weekend and can't say it is an issue that I have. I traded up from a 1.4TSI DSG Golf Mk VI and whilst the Q5 feels a little less sprightly (unsurprising given extra size / weight) I would not say this issue exists on my car.

I also had a Q7 for a couple of weeks from the dealer due to an unexpected delay. This was a 3 litre petrol version, S Tronic, and was swift but again, the Q5 doesn't feel that much different, so perhaps this is an issue which has been sorted.

Hi Neil, I'm really disappointed to hear that you were unsuccessful in getting your issue resolved. On my first attempt to get things fixed I was also stone walled (seems to be the standard MO for these guy's). I can't remember which drivetrain you have but if it is the 3.0TDI then all the numbers I have you will definitely be the same - they always BS about these things but there is not much you can do about it. If you have the 2.0TFSI then let me know as I know someone else who had the transmission update done on his Q5 with equal success. I'm currently having a similar problem trying to get rid of the slow speed steering shudder. They have a fix that is for the A4 and for the 2.0TFSI Q5 but as the 3.0TDI is not listed on the fix they refuse to do it! It really is frustrating isn't it, when you know just how good it could be if only the dealer would cooperate!

Hello,

just bought a Q5 2.0 TFSI with 7-speed stronic 2 weeks ago - its a 2011 model, first registration April 2011. I do experience the same issues with stronic and also the slow speed steering shudder you guys are mentioning.
I went to the Audi Dealer here in Dubai but the (German) technician just finds everything normal.

@CrustyNoodle: You mention in your post "If you have the 2.0TFSI then let me know as I know someone else who had the transmission update done on his Q5 with equal success." Can you shed some more light on that?
Any more news on the steering shudder??

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi Andreas, congratulations on the new Q5.

I'll have to do some investigation on the service code for the 2.0TFSI transmission update but you might try using the number that I mentioned earlier in the thread. However, I would be surprised if your car did not already have the better transmission software as it was released around Oct/Nov 2010 so any cars newer than that are likely to have the better software - maybe that is why the tech says that there is no applicable upgrade for your car.

As for the steering, Our Q is going in for its 2 year service next week and I have arranged for them to replace the power steering hose (it has a pressure valve in it) as that is the item they replaced on the US vehicles with the same problem. The Service Advisor said that there was an upgrade for the 2.0 TFSI for this problem but not the 3.0 TDI however, I haven't heard any rumblings about the issue from 2.0 TFSI owners for quite some time so I was assuming that they had fixed that problem in the build process.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help right now but I do suspect that what you have now is all the latest updates and that there probably aren't any others available.

FWIW I've noticed over time that this issue occurs when the car is cold. I do a lot of short journeys so this is probably why I noticed it so much (that and it being my first auto). I now resolve this by always starting a journey in Sport mode, until the engine warms up to normal operating temperature. I then drop back into Drive. This resolves/works around the issue for me but I suspect it is highly subjective - some won't notice it at all.
